'York County Reads:' Thank You for Your Kindness!

Thanks so much to all those who helped make YCL's first "York County Reads" a success! It was exciting to promote literacy and the community with books and events about kindness and to meet our featured authors. By tying it with our Totally Cool Winter Reading Challenge, York County read nearly 300,000 more minutes this year, putting us in top running for new books and author visits from Penguin Random House. We hope we inspired you to perform a random act of kindness. Join us for our next York County Reads and reading challenges!

Friends of the Library Launch 'New' Newsletter: The Friends of the Library have published the first issue of their newsletter! You can learn more about the Friends here. The Friends and YCL would also like to congratulate the 2019 Volunteer of the Year Award winners, Debora and Jack Hutchins.

Access a wealth of online resources, learning tools, digital services and more with your YCL card! Check out our Virtual Library, Research, Self-Publishing, and Online Learning pages. You'll find new useful tools such as:

  • DigitalLearn.org features courses on using computers, the Internet, and more, consisting of short videos, activities, and handouts, and courses for technology trainers. An email address is required.

  • Value Line offers accurate, insightful investment research on companies, industries, markets, and economies, with information and advice for stocks, mutual funds, options, and other securities.

Thanks for Your Help to Complete the Challenge!

We did it! With your help, YCL completed our Totally Cool Winter Reading Challenge! We had nearly 300,000 more reading minutes logged this year – more than 20 percent! That puts us in top running for new books and author visits from Penguin Random House!

We join many national libraries in temporarily halting the purchase of new materials published by Macmillan publishers for restricting when and how many new eBook titles libraries can purchase.

Help us send a message to Macmillan, its related imprints, and other publishers considering similar restrictions on library materials. Visit eBooksForAll.org for a petition you can sign, links for more information, and additional suggestions to voice your support for public libraries.
