YCL Read Woke Quick Picks
Diversify your reading and grow your mind with YCL's Read Woke Challenge! What is Read Woke? According to Cicely Lewis, Read Woke creator, “Read Woke is a feeling, a form of education, a call to action. It means arming yourself with knowledge to better protect your rights. It’s learning about others so you treat people with respect and dignity, no matter their religion, race, creed, or color.”
For a book to be “woke,” it must:
-
Challenge a social norm
-
Give voice to the voiceless
-
Provide information about a group that has been disenfranchised
-
Seek to challenge the status quo
-
Have a protagonist from an underrepresented or oppressed group
The York County Library staff has used these guidelines to put together the list of "Read Woke Quick Picks" below for adults, teens, and children. The list contains 10 different categories of "diverse voices" that coincide with the Read Woke Challenge. Under each category is a list with a sample of notable resources from our collection, and every title has links to various formats to check out or place on hold.
