Friends of the Library Honor Volunteers and Staff

The Friends of the York County Library recognized approximately 70 people who volunteered for a total of more than 1,000 hours for York County Libraries during 2006 at a volunteer appreciation dessert reception on October 15. Author Mary Kay Andrews was the featured speaker at the event held at the City Club of Rock Hill.

Marianne O’Neill was presented with the Joann Woods McMaster Volunteer Award for 2006 for volunteering with the Friends of the York County Library. She has served as an officer on the Friends’ Board since 2002. The award was named in honor of Joann W. McMaster for her efforts in founding the Friends of the York County Library and serving as the organization’s first president in 1975.

Debbie Turner received the Library Staff Award at the Friends of South Carolina Libraries annual meeting on October 14 in Columbia. The award was created in 1996 to recognize a library employee who has contributed above their normal duties to support a library or libraries in South Carolina. Turner, Community Relations manager for the York County Library, was instrumental in reorganizing the Friends of the York County Library.

The Friends of the Library supports all York County Libraries through fund raising and advocacy. They sponsor the annual vacation reading program available at all York County Libraries for area children, in addition to other library projects.
